The process of finding the next story to pursue is not hard...there is much grist for the mill, especially now.
Finding the proper vehicle that will resonate is the challenge.
I worried that Cassandra would not find an audience, but there was a lot of lively discussion over the paintings and the altered book last night at Rhythmix Cultural Center. Thanks to d'arci Bruno for including my work in the show.

Castle Street Arts District Hosts Sea Turtle Festival
to Benefit Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

Wilmington, N.C. - Artists, musicians, and merchants of the Castle Street Arts District have joined forces with one another to create the first annual Sea Turtle Arts Rescue Festival/S.T.A.R.Festival to benefit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center located on Topsail Island.
The Festival runs Friday and Saturday July, 8th and 9th beginning at 9:00 AM. The festival will be held in the 500 and 600 blocks of Castle Street, Wilmington, N.C.

The sea turtle rescue center is currently building a new hospital on donated land in Surf City, N.C. The center is a non profit organization and relies on donations to keep the center up and running. Caring for these precious and endangered creatures is a full time job for volunteers under Jean Beasley’s direction.

There will be a silent auction of more than 50 works of art by artists’ from across the U.S. with all the proceeds benefiting the sea turtle rescue center. Arts and crafts, live music, great food and drink, and activities for the kids are just a few of the exciting things planned for the festival.

Comments from participating artists:
" I was inspired to donate to the event and to attend for a number of reasons. I felt helpless and frustrated after the Gulf Oil Spill and had been in contact with a group of artist friends for several years on a couple of social network sites. When we began tossing the idea around for this fund raiser I finally saw a way to give back to people who were making a difference in saving some of the endangered wildlife either directly or indirectly. I have also decided to fly across country and attend the festival, bringing my support, some small pieces of recently created turtle art and my wish to finally meet the people that I have grown to know and love and to share in the cause that they have given so much time, creativity and love to." From Christine Rossi, an artist located in the San Francisco Bay area.
Kittie Rue Deemer, an artist from the town of Wake Forest, said, "When I saw the notice about the festival, and then looked at the mission and accomplishments of the Topsail Island turtle rescue group, I knew I must participate. The painting I created is of a green turtle skimming along the seabed. When I scuba dive, my holy grail is to see one of these guys in their native habitat. It's an honor to be able to donate to such a worthy cause."

Gina Locklear, owner of Gypsy Gina’s Arts and Antiques, added, "Castle Street’s new Arts and Antique District is really just getting started in it’s endeavor to become a thriving arts community. “We are thrilled to host this event and help the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center with saving the lives of these precious and endangered creatures.” She went on to say, “ We believe getting involved with worthy causes is vital to our community and to give back is just the cherry on top of the cake.”

History of the Rescue Center
In 1996 a small group of dedicated volunteers with the Topsail Turtle Project stood on an empty lot in Topsail Beach. The group shared a dream....The Topsail Turtle Project was organized by Karen Beasley, as she saw the need to preserve and protect the SEA TURTLE nests, nesting females and hatchlings on the 26 miles of coastline on Topsail Island. After Karen's untimely death, the torch was passed on to her mother, Jean Beasley, today the Executive Director of both the nesting program and the rehabilitation center. The dream of a rehabilitation center was realized through the tireless efforts of the Beasley family, their financial support; the support of the project members, and the generous donations of money, time and material from local residents, businesses and visitors.

All ages are welcome to come and participate, enjoy the festivities, music, food and the turtle art. Remember all of the proceeds from the silent auction go to the turtle hospital program!

The First Annual ‘Sea Turtle Arts Rescue Festival’/S.T.A.R. to benefit The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

The Sea Turtle Arts Rescue /S.T.A.R. organization is proud to present the first annual Sea Turtle Arts Festival, July 8th and 9th from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm. The festival will be held in The Arts and Antique District, 500 & 600 blocks of Castle St., Wilmington, N.C. This event is FREE to the public and will include many fun things to see and do for the entire family.

Painters, clay, wood and metal sculptors, jewelry artists from across the U.S., will have work for show and sale. Many of the artists have donated pieces that will be included in a silent auction which will be held at The Cape Fear Playhouse, 613 Castle St., during the festival. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

“We have more than 50 works of art for the auction, including a hand-formed steel sea turtle complete with it’s egg-filled nest, by a New Hampshire metal artist, known as The Torchcutter.” said Bambi Chappell, a clay sculptor from Southport, N.C. who initiated the event.

Karen Wiles, a photographer from Hampstead, N. C., has donated a print of her award winning photo ‘Dawn of the New Year.’ She said, "I think it’s a perfect piece to be auctioned in the turtle hospital fundraiser, as it displays the absolute beauty of our local waters in North Carolina, which are so vital to the turtles and to all of us in this area. ‘Dawn of the New Year’ was taken on the first morning of 2011 and Topsail Island is shown in the background. This particular piece of artwork has won two art competitions, and earlier this month won an award in the Wilmington Art Association's Spring Juried Art Show as part of the ‘Azalea Festival’ art exhibits."

Jim Calder, world famous wood sculptor and carver, also know as ‘The Wizzard of Wood,’ will teach the elements of carving to children who bring a sweet potato to the festival. Jim says, "Sweet potatoes come in interesting shapes, they're easy to carve, and they dry into a brick-hard substance that retains the carving and actually resembles wood. The kids really get a kick out of it. The tools for carving the potatoes vary from pocket knives to sharpened popsicle sticks.” Gina Locklear, owner of Gypsy Gina’s Arts and Antiques said, “Jim Calder has also donated a life-size Tiki sculpture which everyone will have a chance to win just by making a purchase of $10.00 or more at any of the shops on the route. Your receipt will be your entry to win this magnificent work of art.”

There will be street performers, face painting for the kids, an old fashioned apple bobbing contest, sidewalk chalk art, and more. The organizers are particularly excited to present the line up of live bands which includes The Cosmic Groove Lizards and Transtrum, among others. Also of interest, New Guy Productions, a local Indy film company, will be documenting the two day festival.

A new show opens at Seed Corn Gallery in Berkeley on March 20th, 2009. I was lucky to get one piece in the show. The theme of the show is "Beyond Boundaries".
I interpreted this as the boundaries of time and geography and presented portrait paintings of women members of my family, past and present, those individuals who reach out beyond time and space and created me and my daughters.
Seed Corn took one of the paintings for the show, "Giuseppina e Santina", oil and casein on canvas.
The show reception is this Friday, March 20th at Seed Corn Gallery 1918 University Avenue, Berkeley CA. The Reception is in the evening, I will post the time as soon as I know.

City of Berkeley Hosting Art

The City of Berkeley is hosting art on loan from Expressions Gallery's "Industrial Art" Show. I have three photographs that will be on display from November 12 through the end of February at the Planning and Development Department, on the second floor at 2120 Milvia Street in Berkeley, CA.
They are hosting a reception on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 4 to 6 PM. Come by and take a look!

Now that the election is behind us and hope is in the air. Time to look at the art world that is not part of the big money scene. Those of us that are suffering through the beginning of a very bad time for the arts in general. I have donated art to two auctions taking place this coming weekend. One is to benefit artists with life threatening illnesses (I do not include myself in this category since I am pretty healthy right now), and the other to a very special organization that will be fighting for its existence in the up and coming year, ProArts of Oakland. Check out the next two posts for details on both of these important events.

The month of August has been busy, have been working on new paintings that are slightly different for me. Still representational, but more abstracted. Two "landscapes" and an abstracted figure based on an earlier more representational piece.
I have entered them in a juried show...we will see if anything gets in...

This piece was inspired by a photograph of my grandmother and her older sisters posing for a formal photograph. I think the photo was taken to send to my grandfather and great grandfather who were living in the U.S. so that my grandfather could pick a wife from their home village in Italy.

More Mythological Work

This piece was finished just before the ProArts open house.
It is part of the continuing work on the reinterpretation of ancient mythologies.
This piece comes from the middle eastern ancient Mithraic tradition. The god Mithras fighting and slaying the bull of heaven. Mithras was a solar diety who became very popular in Ancient Rome as a patron god of the soldier. His origins were in Persia and appropriately the images have a kind of resonance for what we are doing to the planet and to each other every day.

I finished painting these two paintings almost simultaneously. I knew that the portrait of the "Flapper" was from a photo of my husband's grandmother. I didn't realize that the other photo I used was of the same grandmother as a little girl. I loved the way she was wearing the bow and the jewelry, very seriously involved in her presentation. I titled this "Bows and Beads". I love doing the paintings from old photos. Some are very blurry or faded and all are sepia or black and white. I have not had any hand colored photos, so I get to imagine the colors that would have been worn or in the background. I try and understand the period as well as the people involved and try to find a way to allow their spirits to flow through the art.

Encaustic Painting difficult to Photograph

I have been trying to photograph my encaustic paintings with little success. The wax has a transluscent effect that give the pieces great depth but it is next to impossible to capture the feeling of the pieces. I think I have solved the problem with photoshop but I have to
re-photograph everything which will take a while. This piece was painted last fall. I think I finally have a photo that looks somewhat like the painting!

Have been busy experimenting with a looser, more impressionistic look with thicker paint and no glazing. The still lifes have been more successful, the landscapes more challenging. I have revised a couple of older experiments.

Things have been very busy, so no posts recently. I have been gearing up for the ProArts open studio in June and trying to enter some competitions, as well as take some classes in an effort to expand my horizons and my techniques. I have work in the Alameda On Camera 2008 Show in the Frank Bette Center, and will soon be moving over to Perforce Software Corporation in Alameda. It is only the second time I have exhibited straight photography. Well they are giclee prints on watercolor paper but they are still photography as opposed to Photobased artwork.

I currently have art in two spaces, Expressions Gallery in Berkeley and The Frank Bette Center in Alameda and I am in the process of launching the first Major satellite show for the Frank Bette Center at Perforce Software in Alameda called "ShowCase Alameda". It includes works from 13 FBCA artists who work in photo-based mediums, all source material from the 2007 "Alameda On Camera" event. The artists have been encouraged to expand the work that they submitted for last year's show. I had so many of my own images to work from but I am pretty much sticking to the baseball league theme that I started with last year...another encaustic painting and the addition to straight photography which is pretty scary since I don't consider myself a photographer!
This year's Alameda On Camera challenge greeted the particpants with more rain, just like last year. I really went out on a limb and decided to work exclusively with photography...okay, so I messed around with photoshop a bit and I am making giclee prints on watercolor paper, but it is still photography rather than painting. I am excited to see how this all works out.

I have resisted drawing and painting horses for a long time, even though my friends have asked me repeatedly. So I have started. This was a gift to my friend for helping me out in my times of need.

These evolved out of a project for the 5+5+5 show in the signature gallery at the Frank Bette Center. The finished piece is an oil painting based on the same theme, the myth of Apollo and Daphne. I chose to use the california landscape and the oak trees as the
embodiment of Daphne. The medium is a combination of my photographs, hand made paper and encaustic paint on masonite.

Just finished this landscape for a client and delivered it this week. I love the look of the coast live oaks and the texture and shape of the california hills. I have started a series of landscapes with the oaks and hillsides, some in oils and some in other mediums. There is a feel to the land and the vegetation that inspires me to let my vision run wild.

Artist Statement
I am inspired by everything in my life, the experience of living in the San Francisco Bay area and trying to make a living within the framework of my passions; Art, music and horses (I train horses and teach classical riding). I draw my work from the place where I exist in the moment.
This is reflected in the medium and style that is delivered to the viewer. My influences are varied, from the paintings of Kahlo and Rivera, Ossario, Picasso, and Alex Katz, to the modern influences of Allyson Hollingsworth, Tony Scherman and Judith Kindler. I work towards the moment within the painting or drawing, the balance of dark and light and the tension created by color defining line and shape.

I use a variety of mediums depending on the type of feeling I am attempting to capture in two dimensions. Oil painting expresses the narrative and captures the energy within the story, or the depiction of everyday life, the luminescence of Casein paint conveys the life within the face of a portrait, and encaustic paint mixed with photos and assemblage is essential to me in relaying the expression of spirit and emotion.

Photography has been a new challenge and I am excited to be able to use this medium in my experimentation and development. Photographic influences are many but Diane Arbus and William Eggleston stand out.
